FAQs

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian Government-funded scheme designed to support Australians who have disabilities. It provides funding and quality-assured assistance to Australians who meet the eligibility requirements.

The eligibility requirements for NDIS will vary from situation to situation. There are some basic requirements, though.

Participants must:

  • Be aged between nine and 65 (children under the age of nine will require early childhood support).
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • Require support due to a permanent or significant disability.
  • Require specific equipment related to a disability.
  • Require support with future needs and daily tasks.

We recommend using the
NDIS’ Eligibility Checklist to find out more about your own eligibility.

If you are eligible for participation in the NDIS scheme, you will be partnered with a Local Area Coordinator who will gain an understanding of your disability, what you want to achieve and what kind of support you need. They will use this to create your NDIS plan.

Once the NDIS approves the plan, you will be able to select providers for the services and assistance you need.

A service agreement will be set up and your provider will work with you to create a personalised support plan to help you make the most of the service.

NDIS funding is the allocated funding the NDIS will provide you for NDIS supports and assistance. This funding is decided based on your NDIS plan and is set out for the duration of the plan. So, if your plan is 12 months, you’ll have 12 months of funding based on your plan. Any amount left over after your plan expires will not roll over once the plan renews.

Your NDIS funding will cover your NDIS support and could include things like a support worker for assistance with daily activities, transport to and from social and community-based activities and help with household tasks.

It could also cover therapeutic supports, like behavioural therapy, physiotherapy or occupational therapy, or physical supports like mobility equipment and vehicle or home modification.

You can find a full list of funded supports on the NDIS website.

The first step is checking the terms and conditions of your service agreement. Here, you’ll be able to find any cancellation fees or agreements that might apply with your provider. You can then end the agreement in line with your service agreement.

We recommend ending the service agreement in writing to ensure the process is formalised. You will then need to develop a new support plan and service agreement with your new NDIS provider.

If you’re choosing to come to Preferred Care, we can help you through this process.

The NDIS program will cover a variety of intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, physical or psychosocial disabilities. Here are some of the disabilities that are covered:

  • Deafness
  • Blindness
  • Intellectual disability
  • Autism
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Brain injury
  • Cerebral palsy

There are a few different factors to consider when choosing an NDIS provider. First and foremost, we recommend choosing someone you’re comfortable with, but here are some other factors to consider:

  • The supports offered. Does the provider offer the specific support you need?
  • Alignment. Does the provider and their support align with you personally and with your goals?
  • Flexibility. Is the provider flexible in how support is delivered and scheduled?
  • Registration. Is the provider registered with NDIS?

It’s important to make sure your NDIS provider aligns with you personally to ensure you have a positive support experience.
